It is rightly said that the 'Dawn of Conscience' occurred in ancient Egypt. There was belief in a 'Great God', the supreme deity from which all else came, and from which came Ma'at, the quality of being in right-relationship with the surrounding world. There were the roots of morality and ethics, the idea that this life was a passage into the next, and that what happened on that passage was determined by one's conduct in the here and now. These concepts were the anchor of Egyptian life, and were well in place five thousand years ago.
